Nathaniel Avila, MD is a Houston-native gastroenterologist at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital who specializes in treating a variety of conditions including gastroesophageal reflux, swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), achalasia, peptic ulcer disease, pancreatic and liver disease, obesity and nutritional disorders and advanced techniques for weight loss. Dr. Avila completed medical school and his internal medicine residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. During his medical residency, he was the first-ever resident to be named Physician of the Quarter by Harris County Health System as a result of his clinical care for those within the Houston community. During this time, he also received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award, an accolade based on exceptional teaching skills and a commitment to the compassionate treatment of patients and families, students and colleagues. Dr. Avila went on to complete his Gastroenterology Fellowship at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, where he won the national ACG best fellow abstract for functional bowel disorder. I am honored and humbled to care for the people in my community, said Avila. A lot of people have invested in my life which, in turn, has blessed me with the ability and desire to give back to others. I practice medicine because I love people and want to be part of their path toward wellness. When not caring for patients, Dr. Avila enjoys coaching his children™s soccer and T-ball teams, serving as a keynote speaker for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and volunteering to teach nationally ranked high school tennis players.
