The most prominent feature of the region is the Soutpansberg mountain range which cuts across from East to West just to the North of Louis Trichardt. The mountain range is named after a large salt pan at the base of its northwestern slopes. This pan has been used as a waterhole by game since time immemorial, and salt has been mined there from the Stone Age until the present. For the birders, TUINHUIS promises to be most rewarding, as there are numerous raptors that make this mountainous terrain their home. Indigenous Protea shrubs grace the property, luring the elusive Gurney's Sugarbird to its nectar rich flowers. Special species such as Blue-spotted Wood-Dove, African Broadbill, Eastern Nicator, Gorgeous Bush-Shrike, Orange Ground-Thrush, Crested Guineafowl, Mountain Loerie as well as Crowned and Black Eagle can be found which are some of the ±600 bird species to be found in the mountain with more than 500 plant species. For the explorer, TUINHUIS is the perfect base from where to experience Limpopo’s tourist attractions, like Mapungubwe National Park and Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, and the famous Kruger National Park.
