About

Although there is a long history of mango production in South Africa, SAMGA’s history only stretches back to the early 1970's, when a forum was established to solve producer problems through research and to facilitate communication between researchers and producers. SAMGA believes that through research, better mangoes will be grown more efficiently to make mango farming more profitable. SAMGA is a producer association, and membership represents about 80% of all mango growers in South Africa. The South African volumes have stabilized around 75 000 tons of fruit per annum. Although the percentage of fruit exported has declined in the recent years to the current 500 000 4 kg cartons, the local market is still responsible for 20 000 tons of fresh fruit sales annually. Other distribution channels have grown and the dried mango industry processes almost 15 000 tons of fresh fruit per year. Juicing and achar are also major outlets, accounting annually for approximately 20 000 t and 15 000 t respectively. SAMGA research is currently geared towards market access into China and India, as access to new market such as these will relive pressure on traditional export markets such as the EU and the Middle East and provide a profitable alternative for growers.
