About

The Lakeside Hostel is situated on 4+ acres and shares a border with the Lake Earl Wildlife Refuge. As a result Lake Earl is a short walk from the property and wild animals are commonly seen on the property. Some of the wild animals include coyotes, Grey Foxes, Douglas Squirrels, Bobtail Quail, Ring Neck Pheasants, Grouse, Elk, Deer, Racoons, Bob Cats, and large assortment of birds. Just after sundown you commonly hear the owls hootting. Inspite of the rural setting, the hostel is only 3.89 miles from the nearest grocery store (Walmart), and only 4.5 miles from downtown Crescent City. We offer one of the lowest cost transient accommodations in the area and many people stay with us to see the redwoods, attend a family event, or throw a party. Our pricing schedule is as follows:

a) Private room -- $33/night
b) Double occupancy for a private room -- $40/night
c) Whole house booking is $80/night and subject to seasonal pricing and availability. A whole house booking can accommodate up to 8 people, and there is an extra charge of up to $25 to bring an extra bed out for groups of 9 or more.
d) Additional booking fees may apply depending on which booking agency you contact. Except for credit card fees, we do not charge additional fees if booked through us directly at .

Special discounts are available for small children ages six and under for either private rooms or whole house bookings when the total number in the group exceeds 6. To book a reservation just send us an email to , and provide us a copy of your government issued picture ID, and a photo copy of a check that you wish to pay your guest fees with. We will then deposit the image of your check to our account. We can also accept Paypal and credit cards, but they are subject to a 3.1% booking fee.

As for the property itself, on the outside you will see an east fenced pasture that is being worked by an organic farmer. And just outside the hostel are two dilapidated looking storage buildings, and a rather worn looking camp trailer that was recently acquired. We plan on completely restoring the camp trailer so that it may be used as temporary emergency housing by one of our housekeepers.

Our checkin policy is 1pm - 9pm, but early drop off is allowed. No such restriction on checkin is made for guests reserving the entire facility. For guests who must arrive after 9 pm, we request that they park on the street, and use extra caution when closing the front door so as not to wake up or disturb other guests. Access to the building is by lock box code which is provided after payment is received. For guests not reserving the entire facility, the kitchen and wash machine close at 8:45 pm. This policy doesn't apply to guests who reserve the entire facility or if the guest is the only one staying with us for the evening. Pets are prohibited at this time, but we are taking steps to build a new building where pets will be allowed. We only allow pets for people who are visually or hearing impaired, or other certified medical disability. We don't consider the property ADA accessible because of one step from the kitchen to the utility room, two steps from rm 3 to the living room, one step from the kitchen to the living room, and a small door to the bathroom. Smoking is prohibited anywhere on hostel property, but drinking alcoholic beverages is not prohibited. Items in the closet marked "manager's closet" belong to housekeeping. All food in the refrigerator is set aside for guests, and there are free teas, coffees, spices, and condiments for guests. We ask guests to remove shoes before entering the building. A shoe rack is left to your left when you walk inside.

Inside you will find an older fully furnished house, but it is clean and well kept. We offer both private and dorm style rooms, but most people staying the dorm room are in there alone. Heating is controlled individually in each room by an oil filled electric radiator, except for the living room which has both a wall heater as well as an oil filled electric radiator. Upgrades to the property are ongoing, and we hope to install torch down over the porch awning in November before the rains start, and move the camp trailer to the east lawn until we finish clearing and removing ivy from the property If we get rally lucky we might be able to begin primer some or all of the outside of the trailer before the rains start. In early January we will do a mini upgrade of the bathroom and change the toilet, linoelum, patch some wall plates with XP Purple sheet rock, replace a square of sheet rock in the ceiling with XP purple sheet rock, and install new baseboards. However, in the future we would like to double the size of the bathroom and rebuild the utility room, etc.
