About Northern Colorado -

The heat suffocates, its big cities do not impress and the dangers to dodge usually come in the form of a sandstorm ('haboob' for the locals) or rattlesnake (the 'diamondback' gives its proud baseball team its name).

However, the Grand Canyon State has a desert, little polished beauty and wildlife that has seen in its indigenous roots and in the wake of John Wayne's westerns an excuse to not be tamed.

Its cactus and reddish stone act as a national emblem. Meanwhile, the Colorado River draws in its path some of the most beautiful points on the planet. But Arizona is much more than aridity in embers, it's something like the history, culture and nature that springs up while you look for Coyote and the Road Runner from its vast highways.

This 'road trip' starts in Phoenix, its capital, where almost all flights to Arizona land. Once mounted on Interstate I-17, we will cross the Coconino National Forest until we find the incarnated rock formations that surround the city of Sedona. The attractions here are not few, so to extend the stay a couple of days will be anything but preposterous. Combating the heat is mandatory and doing it from the natural slides of the Slide Rock water park will probably be the most delicious tourist trap. For those who prefer a relaxed dip, it is worthwhile to sweat the shirt to the Chavez Ranch creek, an oasis in the middle of nature. The Chapel of the Holy Cross will be our next stop, since you do not have to be a fervent Catholic to appreciate the uniqueness of this modernist temple embedded in rock. Not far away, Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock draw the famous and abrupt 'sky line' of this place while they challenge us to crown its summit. Fishing in Oak Creek Canyon or approaching the mining town (now ghost) of Jerome will be the best brooch to our stay.
