Eliot H. Zimbalist, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, he is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology with more than four decades of experience in gastroenterology, hepatology, and advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy. Throughout his distinguished career, he has been recognized as a trusted clinician, educator, researcher, and healthcare leader dedicated to advancing digestive health and improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Zimbalist served for 14 years as Director of the Division of Gastroenterology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he successfully expanded clinical services, strengthened fellowship education, and helped build one of the institution’s most active endoscopy programs. Under his leadership, the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program maintained continuous ACGME accreditation, expanded faculty and trainee participation, and achieved a 100% board pass rate among graduates. He also played a central role in developing clinical guidelines, endoscopy operations, credentialing standards, and quality initiatives that enhanced patient care and operational efficiency.
Dr. Zimbalist completed his medical degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai following undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at Maimonides Medical Center and pursued advanced fellowship training in Gastroenterology through programs affiliated with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Cornell University Medical College.
Throughout his career, Dr. Zimbalist has been consistently recognized for excellence in medicine, earning inclusion among Castle Connolly Top Doctors for nearly three decades and receiving multiple regional and national professional honors. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association and has served as a reviewer for the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
Today, Dr. Zimbalist continues to be recognized for his expertise in the diagnosis and management of digestive diseases, with particular interests in gastrointestinal oncology, hepatology, colon cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease, and advanced endoscopic procedures. His career reflects a longstanding commitment to clinical excellence, physician education, research, and compassionate patient care.
