Rex Mahnensmith, MD, PC, provides care as a general practitioner focusing on continuing care at DOCs Urgent Care in locations in Southington and Waterbury. He dedicates his time and established medical skills to serving the men and women and children who are enrolled as members of the Telemedicine Services to which he belongs. He happily remains available for care provisions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Dr. Mahnensmith completed his undergraduate education at Denison University in Ohio, where he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society and graduated summa cum laude. He then received a scholarship to attend the Yale School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1977. At graduation, he was the singular recipient of Yale’s Berniker Award for exemplifying the Prayer of Maimonides and Oath of Hippocrates. He has composed special articles about Maimonides Prayer and Hippocrates Oath on his LinkedIn Website, as these have very special meaning for him.
After graduation, Dr. Mahnensmith did his internal medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he served as chief resident and received the Kushlan Award for his exemplary bedside manner and patient devotion.
From 1984-2014, Dr. Mahnensmith served as a clinician and educator at Duke Medical Center, Brown University, and Yale. At Yale, he earned his status as a Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Clinical Director of Nephrology. During his teaching career, Dr. Mahnensmith was recognized as Teacher of the Year, Model Physician, and Exemplary Clinician-Educator.
Dr. Mahnensmith is a primary care internist for three nursing homes in northern Connecticut and then at the StayWell Community Healthcare Center in Waterbury, Connecticut. He showed a special affinity for helping the elder feeble and the underserved and underinsured.
All through his career, Dr. Mahnensmith exemplified and influenced his students to show compassion and heartfelt dedication for every person in their care. He considers his vocation his true calling and takes a servant role in it.
In his free time, Dr. Mahnensmith dedicates time to Bible study, men’s ministries, and community worship. He especially enjoys gardening, wildlife, nature walks, and bike rides. Time with his wife, adult children, grandchildren, and dogs is especially precious to him.
