Meet Dr. Micaela Della Torre. The first in her family to become a physician, she originally intended to pursue a career in physics. “I soon realized that I enjoy being in contact with people,” she says. “So, I decided that physics and math couldn’t possibly be rewarding enough for me.”
Fortunately for Beacon Health System, she chose a career in Maternal and Fetal Medicine. “I’m a strong advocate for women and women’s rights,” Micaela explains. “I felt this was an underserved area, and I think a well-trained MFM physician could change maternal morbidity and mortality in the state of Indiana.”
Dr. Della Torre believes in using evidence-based, patient-centered care. “The patient comes first,” she explains. “I believe you should do the best you can, and I like to be a great advocate for the people I treat.”
Over the years, Dr. Della Torre believes her patients have made her a better person. She wants them to know that she is always accessible, ready to help them make healthy life choices. “My patients are a priority to me.”
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My father first – he was smart and strong. My husband next – he taught me to be better every day; and my father-in-law, who was an amazing doctor for women.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I was a first responder, and I remember being scared when the ambulance was called.
What is your favorite food? Movie? My favorite food is chocolate – and chocolate. Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone, alive or deceased, who would it be and why? It would be my father who passed 20 years ago. I miss his wisdom and spirit.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I love kids, dogs, gardening, sewing, embroidery, knitting, cooking and dancing.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I love to travel and explore different cultures and heritages. I like to dance, and I used to be a flamenco dancer.
