When you are given a script, after having read the story and highlighted your part, immediately try to understand how long it will take you to memorize your lines, if you will have to learn a monologue (or more than one) and with how many characters you will have to interact, so as not to arrive unprepared for the day when the director decreed as the day “InCuiNonVoglioVedereUnCopioneInMano!”.

A cold sweat day because to reassure the director you will say you know everything by heart, except then go on stage and don't even remember what your part is!

ACTING IS NOT JUST A MATTER OF MEMORY!
The script tells a story, it tells the passions, anxieties and moments of glory of the characters who are part of it. And you have to put your heart where words stop! Thus the interpretation is born and the characters can finally find their identity.
Simply learning the script by heart and repeating it on stage will not make you ascend to the Olympus of the actors, but just in case it will make you go home full of tomatoes and salad!

Whether you have to face a dialogue or a monologue, try to imagine from the first readings the sensations and emotions that you will have to convey to the public: with each line you will slide more and more into the soul of your character.

While in a dialogue the presence of two or more characters gives liveliness to the scene, how can you declaim a monologue without being flat and monotonous but, on the contrary, thrilling the audience with every word and maybe getting a nice applause?

TAKE CARE OF YOUR DIECTION!
The moment of the monologue is perhaps one of the most important within a show. You need to make sure all viewers understand what you are saying. You cannot have speech defects or dialect inflections, which can ruin your beautiful monologue that you have worked so hard to prepare.

MY FIRST MONOLOGO.
The first time I was given a monologue at the acting school, I had been attending the theater for a few months. It was an intermediate test and the teacher studied our progress by showing the group with an evening dedicated exclusively to monologues.

They entrusted me with a monologue taken from Pirandello's “Vestire gli ignudi”.

It was not so much the story itself that troubled me, but the twenty lines to learn by heart! 20 lines that looked like 20 pages!

What memory do I have of that evening? The heart beating at a thousand and one girl (I was about sixteen) frightened that in a low voice she repeated words probably without understanding their meaning.

In short, stuff to leave the theater the next day.

Fortunately I didn't!

Training and stubbornness allowed me to acquire method and so during rehearsals and on stage I learned (or at least I hope so!) To express emotions and not just parrot what the script said.

And above all I learned not to be afraid of that moment when on stage there is only you, your voice, your body, your feelings and the audience attentive to what you say and how you move.

Just you and your heart beating fast, very fast.
