More information about Spade Enterprise Centre

SPADE Enterprise Centre is a community based enterprise centre which was opened in 1990 in the converted St. Paul's Church at North King Street, a sector designated for urban renewal at that time. The Smithfield area has undergone total redevelopment and has changed radically in the past ten years.

The purpose of the SPADE initiative was to assist local unemployed people to successfully set up their own businesses. From the outset this initial venture proved a success and within a short time each of the original 25 independent workshop and office units within the building were let to a wide range of new businesses. These units range in size from 150ft² to 450ft² (14m² to 42m²)

Spade has embarked on a refurbishment plan of the interior of St Paul's church, which includes substantial upgrade of office space and technology. Over the coming months, the centre will be in a position to provide high quality, modern, comfortable office space which will include top of the range IT/telephony platform to assist businesses, particularly those in the technology sector.

Businesses at North King Street have included food manufacturers, engineering workshops, equipment distributors, marketing consultants among others.

The majority of businesses which commenced in the centre subsequently moved on to larger commercial premises - making the units available again to businesses with further job creation potential. There are now 155 viable jobs existing within the centre and an even greater number elsewhere in respect of companies which formed in Spade and have successfully moved on.
