Het Clusius College heeft zijn naam ontleend aan de geleerde Charles deL' Ecluse. Echter zoals alle geleerden uit zijn tijd werd hij bekend onder de verlatijnste versie van zijn naam "Carolus Clusius".
Deze Zuid-Nederlandse plantkundige, studeerde in verschillende Europese steden. Hij heeft onder andere de flora van Spanje (alle bekende planten) en de flora van Oostenrijk geschreven.In 1593 werd hij benoemd tot hoogleraar in de botanie te Leiden. De Universiteitstuin, "de Leidse Hortus Botanicus" heeft door hem internationale status en inhoud verkregen.Hij voerde veel planten in Nederland in, o.a. de paardenkastanje, de plataan, de snijboon, de schorseneer en de jasmijn. Clusius beschreef als eerste de tulp en voerde deze ook in Nederland in.

Het Clusius College heeft 8 vestigingen in Noord-Holland. Het Clusius College verzorgt vmbo en mbo-opleidingen op het gebied van plant, dier, groen, bloem, styling, ondernemen, voeding, recreatie, techniek, natuur en milieu.
Vmbo- vestigingen zijn er in Amsterdam, Castricum, Grootebroek, Heerhugowaard en Purmerend. De vestiging Alkmaar, Hoorn en Schagen bieden zowel vmbo als mbo-onderwijs aan.
Verder kent het Clusius College, in samenwerking met ROC Kop van Noord-Holland en onder de naam Onderwijsgroep Noordwest-Holland, een aparte afdeling voor bedrijfsopleidingen, cursussen en contractwerk. Het College van Bestuur en het Centraal Bureau met ondersteunende diensten zijn gevestigd in Alkmaar.
Het Clusius College telt momenteel ruim 1800 mbo-studenten, ruim 3850 vmbo-scholieren en 694 medewerkers. Het Clusius College vormt een coöperatie met ROC Kop van Noord-Holland. De coöperatie wordt Onderwijsgroep Noordwest Holland genoemd.
