Osteopathie is een manuele (met de handen) behandelvorm die als doel heeft de mobiliteit van alle structuren binnen het lichaam te normaliseren. Dit zal effect hebben op de doorbloeding, de activiteit van het zenuwstelsel en de trekkrachten van de verschillende structuren. Hierdoor kan het lichaam zijn zelf herstellend vermogen optimaal benutten. Daarbij zal de osteopaat alle structuren van het lichaam onderzoeken, dus niet alleen het houdings- en bewegingsapparaat, maar ook andere structuren zoals de viscera (ingewanden) en het cranium (schedel).Het onderzoek begint met een uitgebreid gesprek om er achter te komen hoe de klachten zijn ontstaan. De osteopaat zal met zijn handen alle bewegingssystemen evalueren.
Hierbij worden de wervelkolom, gewrichten, organen en bindweefselstructuren nagekeken en wordt bekeken hoe de blokkades en beperkingen in het lichaam met de klacht in verband kunnen staan.
Daarna bespreekt de osteopaat met de patient zijn bevindingen en wordt een behandelplan opgesteld.
Een osteopatische behandeling is gebaseerd op drie basisprincipes:
1. Het lichaam is een biologische eenheid.
2. Het lichaam bezit auto-corrigerende en auto-regulerende mechanismen.
3. De structuur bepaalt de functie en omgekeerd.
Een osteopaat onderzoekt niet alleen de regio waarin de klacht op treedt, maar het hele lichaam en gaat daar aan het werk waar hij de oorzaak aantreft. Hij gaat opzoek naar disfunkties, dikwijls in de vorm van mobiliteitsverlies, binnen het bewegingsapparaat alsook weefsel en orgaanstrcturen in borst- en buikholte.
Bijvoorbeeld:
Bewegingsverlies van de dikke darm kan leiden tot o.a. verstoppingen of rugklachten. Een osteopaat is opgeleid om gewrichten en organen één voor één weer bewegelijk te maken, zodat het lichaam weer ongehinderd en pijnvrij kan functioneren.
Na iedere behandeling vindt er een evaluatie plaats. Dan wordt beoordeeld hoever het lichaam is met het genezingsproces.
