Osteopathie is een manuele therapie die zich toelegt op het herstellen van een verstoord evenwicht binnen het lichaam. Dit verstoorde evenwicht kan zich uiten in klachten zoals bijvoorbeeld rug-, buik-, hoofd- en maagpijn. Één van de belangrijkste principes van osteopathie is dat het lichaam in totaliteit wordt bekeken en dat het autoregulerend mechanisme van het lichaam wordt gestimuleerd. Osteopathie gaat op zoek naar de oorzaak van de klacht en dit is niet altijd de plek waar de klacht of pijn zich bevindt! De pijn die aan het licht komt, is het resultaat waarvan de oorzaak meestal in de schaduw ligt.Osteopathie zal door middel van manuele technieken de bewegingsbeperking(en) in het lichaam en ook de oorzaak van deze bewegingsbeperkingen opsporen en behandelen. Dit om het zelfgenezend vermogen van het lichaam te stimuleren. Hierdoor is het lichaam opnieuw in staat om zichzelf te herstellen. Dit autoregulerend mechanisme kan enkel gestimuleerd worden wanneer de patiënt op een juiste manier behandeld wordt. Elke klacht bij iedere patiënt wordt objectief bekeken. Een patiënt kan namelijk met dezelfde symptomen binnenkomen als de voorgaande patiënt maar de symptomen kunnen heel goed een andere oorzaak hebben. Hierdoor zal ook geen enkel behandelplan compleet identiek zijn.
