ABS carries out extensive IVP work for a variety of corporate clients incl. Fonterra VLB, LIC, PGG Wrightson and transfers approx 2000 bovine IVP embryos per year. ABS achieves good success with IVP with 60% pregnancy rate for fresh IVP embryos and 50% for frozen (vitrified ) VP embryos. ABS operates a 300 hectare farm for resident animals. ABS has around 600 recipient cows to carry out its contract programs.Bull semen collection centre bull centre, based at Rukuhia, has been operating since the 1970s. Processing for the 2009 season is set to be around 350, 000 straws including 120, 000 fresh semen straws. Recent growth of our cornerstone shareholder, Liberty Genetics, is seeing our bull centre grow quite significantly and we expect there to be a progressive shift to fresh semen output. We have developed a unique system of fresh semen with AgResearch and have trialled the use at day.In off season for bulls the centre also carries out ram semen collection and undertakes a Dairy Goat AI program for the Dairy Goat Co-op.Pig AI in a very successful JV with Waratah Farms, ABS operates a pig semen collection and AI business. Approx. 50, 000 doses of pig semen are sold annually giving ABS / Waratah some 40-50% of NZ market share. The business has seen steady and strong growth over the past 7 years and has gained resource consent to expand the facility from it’s current 32 boars to 48 early next year. This will give capacity to continue growth.Small Ruminant Embryo Transfer sheep have the opposite breeding season to cattle and ABS has been very successful in developing it’s sheep, goat and deer ET business. ABS has exported several thousand sheep embryos per year for the past 5 years for RBL.
