Milk and milk products contain an excellent balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Milk is also an excellent source of essential nutrients such as calcium, riboflavin, phosphorous, vitamins A, D and B12 as well as pantothenic acid. It has long been recognised for its important role in bone health. Milk products also contain ‘high quality proteins’ that are well suited to human needs. Milk proteins increase the value of poorer quality cereal and vegetable proteins in the diet by providing the amino acids these proteins lack. Two to three servings of low fat and fat free milk and milk products are recommended per day to help provide adults with adequate calcium, potassium, vitamins A and B12. It has also been shown that individuals who consume more dairy foods have better overall diets and notice improved bone health. It is for this reason that dairy was included as one of the food groups to encourage.
