Downtown Asheville has been designated as a National Historic District and the Asheville Flatiron Building is amongst 257 of these historic buildings and architectural gems. Asheville’s Flatiron Building is located in the central business district in downtown Asheville. The prestigious address of 10-20 Battery Park Avenue is surrounded by hotels, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and the Asheville Urban Trail. Designed by architect Albert C. Wirth, this eight-story 1927 classically detailed tan brick office building has a “flatiron” (triangular) floor plan. The first two floors on Battery Park Avenue and the corner are faced with limestone ashlar. The second story “point” features a classic Romeo and Juliet balcony. The building is topped with a mutule cornice of limestone and copper parapet. Within, Asheville’s Flatiron Building hosts World Coffee Cafe and its outdoor terraced SkyBar. Home to over sixty businesses, the terrazzo marble floors, and original antique fixtures are part of its old-world charm and connection to Asheville’s prohibition era history.
