A Rheumatologist is an internist or pediatrician who is specially trained to diagnose
and treat arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles, and bone.

A Rheumatologist completes four years of medical school, three years of an internal
medicine residency training program, and then two-three years of a Rheumatology fellowship
training program.

Over 100 different types of arthritis are treated by Rheumatologists, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, bursitis, spondylitis, back pain, and osteoporosis.

Initial consultation will typically involve the doctor taking a medical history, doing a physical examination, and ordering blood tests and/or X-Rays. The doctor will allow time for you to ask questions. Follow-up appointments are often necessary.
