About

Parts of a diesel engine and the knowledge that goes along with them can be daunting. With such a large variety of engine series in existence, entire warehouses have been devoted to storing each engine’s pieces in order to keep commerce up and on its feet. When members of a trucking or shipping fleet need repairs, or a farmer’s tractor calls it quits, diesel mechanics are left with the task of determining which parts are required for repair. Here we provide a guide for our novice mechanics as to the basicparts of a diesel engine and their functions.
 Cylinders/Combustion Chambers – This contains the pistons and is where injectors disperse fuel for ignition. Diesel engines have between one and twelve cylinders depending on their size.
 Pistons – This fits inside the cylinder and compresses the air inside in order to increase pressure leading up to fuel dispersion and combustion.
 Fuel Injector – This sprays a fine fuel mist directly into the cylinder and is perfectly timed with each piston-stroke.
 Crankshaft – This converts the pistons’ up and down movements into arepetitive circular motion.
 Connecting Rods – This fastens the crankshaft and piston together.
 Valves – These allow air and exhaust to enter and exit the combustion chamber before and after each ignition.
 Note: When inspecting and diagnosing problems, be sure to check each of these parts of a diesel engine. And of course there are many more pieces to the puzzle such as filters, seals, and gaskets, so be sure to evaluate every inch before reaching any conclusions.
Once you have determined which products need repairs or replacement, the next task becomes what type of purchase the mechanic must make to complete their job. Below are some tips to consider when doing this:
 Newest Release vs. Aftermarket: Is the engine twenty-years-old? Or is it the newest model on the market? This determines where mechanics will go to purchase their diesel parts. You will either head to a dealer for the newest original releases, or you will turn to an aftermarket parts provider if the engine parts have been on the market for a number of years.
 Genuine vs. Will-Fit vs. Reman: Do you want the title? Or would you prefer the identical off-brand parts of a diesel engine? And if you are buying in the aftermarket, would you prefer the identical remanufactured products? It likely comes down to personal preferences. Buying the title is more expensive, whereas the off-brand and remanufactured parts of a diesel engine are more cost-effective provided that they are from reliable vendors. An example is if your engine came with a Cummins filter. You could order the same Cummins replacement filter, or you could order the just-as-reliable Baldwin off-brand for a better price.
 Customer Service vs. None: Whoever you’re purchasing from, are they helpful? Do they ask questions to make sure you are purchasing the correct products? Dealing with businesses that have knowledgeable employees tend to lead to better founded purchases and, in turn, higher quality products.
 Pricing vs. Quality: Just because the product you are purchasing is the cheapest does not mean it’s the best quality and vice versa. The product that’s pricy might not be the top quality. Make sure the salesman or woman helping you is asking questions and helping you locate the correct part and quality you are trying to find.
Hopefully this article has given you a few pointers for when purchasing parts of a diesel engine. In order to provide your own customers the service they are hoping for, it becomes necessary to be diligent in your research and purchasing.
