David grew up on a farm in an Amish community in Iowa where his family raised cattle, hogs, corn and soybeans. An avid outdoorsman from an early age, he hunted pheasant and quail in the area, enjoying some of the best wild bird hunting in the U.S. During his high school years, he raised horses to earn extra money. David joined the U.S. Air Force in 1969, and after his discharge in 1973 moved to Wyoming where he worked in the oil fields as part of a seismology crew. Weekends in Wyoming were mostly spent fishing for trout in the many streams throughout the state. From Wyoming, David moved to Denver and then back to Iowa where he drove truck coast-to-coast with a Chicago-based transport company.
In 1980, while driving through California, he stopped to visit an old Air Force friend living in Grass Valley and then decided to move there. He met his wife soon after visiting Grass Valley, and they were married in 1982. David graduated college with a degree in Electrical Engineering. While working for a local broadcast equipment manufacturer, he opened an outdoor sporting goods store where he worked part-time. While operating the store, he joined IHMSA as a competitor in the large bore handgun class. For the next 25 years, he consulted as an electrical engineer to various companies including NASA and the Department of Defense where he worked on big name projects like the Strategic Defense Initiative.
Through his engineering career, he also participated in several sideline ventures including gold recovery in New Mexico and small placer operations in Northern California. David spends his spare time hunting, fishing, and gold prospecting in the Sierra Nevada’s. His regular excursions throughout Northern and Central California and Nevada give him a real grasp of the terrains, climates, and demographics for the Valley, Mountain, Desert, and Coastal regions. David chose to join California Outdoor Properties because of the amazing team of experts, an excellent track record of satisfied customers, and a shared love for the outdoors. David lives with his wife and sons in Grass Valley, CA.
