Internal medicine is the medicine that deals with disorders of inter-body structures in adults. A doctor of internal medicine, also called an internist," is unique in his/her focus on adult medicine. Internists spend all their time diagnosing and treating adults. A patient goes to an internist with a specific problem or for a checkup. Internist should not be confused with an intern, who is a doctor in his first year of training after medical school.
