About Dr. Hazel
It was from a conversation with her father during junior high school that Heather S. Hazel, MD, decided to become a doctor. She was already leaning toward nursing. “My grandmother was a nurse and I was always interested in the things that she did since I was little,” she says. But once her dad suggested the next level of doctor, the seed was planted.
Dr. Hazel earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Indiana University, Bloomington, and her Doctor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. She completed her residency at St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency, South Bend.
Dr. Hazel sees family medicine as a practice in developing relationships. “We are better able to help people to be well when we can understand where they are coming from,” she says. “I practice medicine as a collaborator with my patients.”
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? So many people have influenced me in important ways. My grandmother was the foundation of the nurse/caregiver/lover of people that I aspired to become. My parents have demonstrated that goals can be achieved with hard work. My husband has been the one to encourage me and helped me to understand my value.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? My first real job was at Burger King. It was hard work. It was a great place to learn basic work habits.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? Jesus Christ would be the best answer. As the song goes, would I even be able to speak? I think that meeting will have to wait. I would like another dinner with ones that I love who have passed.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? My family is my real passion. I married my junior high sweetheart and we have two sons. We have been fully immersed in school and sports and are now coming to the end of high school with our youngest.
