Alvin Htut, MD, is the clinical director of transplant hepatology for Queens at the Northwell Transplant Institute, and an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He joined Northwell in 2023.Dr. Htut attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He did his internal medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center and gastroenterology fellowship at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and returned to Montefiore in the Bronx to complete his transplant hepatology fellowship, staying on board as faculty in their department of hepatology. He worked at Montefiore New Rochelle as well, where he ascended to chief of hepatology.He moved to Northwell Health for the opportunity to join the first and only liver transplant program in the entirety of Long Island, which includes Brooklyn and Queens. We bring high-level care to communities that haven't historically had easy access to this type of medicine, he says. Most of the transplant institutes are in Manhattan, a two-hour drive from eastern Long Island.Having grown up in Queens, Dr. Htut knows the importance of respecting different cultures. One of our top priorities is to deliver culturally sensitive care because we know that can provide a sense of calm to patients. We have providers from a variety of communities that speak various languages and understand different cultural nuances and mindsets, he says.As a clinician, Dr. Htut focuses on breaking down complex information for his patients and radiating a sense of calm in his bedside demeanor, a skill that he emphasizes to the medical students and fellows he trains. He enjoys and excels at teaching, as shown by the teaching award his fellows gave him during his first year as an attending.Outside of the hospital, he focuses on community education and engagement. He makes time to attend local outreach events and has been active in the Myanmar American Medical Education Society (MAMES) for the past 15 years, building community and sharing resources with fellow Burmese doctors.At the end of the day, what really motivates Dr. Htut are helping patients and working alongside great people. Northwell's team atmosphere is unique and wonderful. We enjoy a kind of camaraderie allows us to work better together for our patients.
