The Penn Women's Fully Integrated Rectovaginal Symptom Team (FIRST) Clinic located in the Penn Medicine Washington Square outpatient building a multidisciplinary practice that addresses colorectal, gastrointestinal, and urogynecological issues, including defecatory disorders, prolapse and incontinence, in a single convenient location.
Certain conditions require colorectal, gastrointestinal and urogenital co-management and Penn Women's FIRST Clinic patients have the opportunity to be evaluated by all three specialist providers at one location in a streamlined fashion.
A patient can be referred to our team by a current provider or a patient themselves can inquire about being seen by the Women's FIRST team. Our team reviews all referrals and patient medical charts to evaluate if the Women’s FIRST team is the right fit for the patient’s medical needs. Patients will then have one to two appointments with specialists. The first visit is typically with a gastroenterologist and can be in person or virtual (determined by insurance and patient preference) and the second visit is in person with a urogynecologist and colorectal surgeon during which a physical exam will be a key part of the assessment. Based on the patient’s individual needs and after the initial assessment(s), patients are assigned a primary specialist for follow-up.
A note about our office hours: The FIRST Clinic is open for appointments once a month. Patients may contact our team during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
