Hypnotherapy really is simply about changing the limiting beliefs held in the subconscious mind. One of the most important aspects of the subconscious mind as relates to hypnotherapy is the fact that the subconscious controls the Autonomic Nervous System. This means that most, if not all, nervous functions which are not the result of conscious effort (such as moving your large muscle groups around) are under the influence of subconscious processing. Some of this is obvious: if you are nervous, your heart-rate increases and you begin to sweat. Some are much less obvious: when the mind is stressed, the immune system is suppressed to divert energy to systems needed for a fight-or-flight response. So the subconscious effects immune function, digestive function, reproductive function, and truly almost all of the body’s functions. Hypnotherapy can accelerate healing, whether from illness or trauma. Of course, the subconscious also effects our conscious thought processes as well. Ideas held in the subconscious influence how we perceive our world and ourselves. We often take fore-granted that what our sense tell us is reality, but the truth is that our sense input is highly screened by our minds before we actually perceive it. This means that subconscious beliefs actually alter what we see when we look in a mirror, what we hear when we’re being interviewed for a job, what we taste when we eat. We often project a belief out onto everything we experience, whether that belief is supported by our experience or not. Over time, this even causes transfiguration as our belief creates circumstances in our life to substantiate it, and attracts people and conditions which will fit with our belief. So, my hypnotherapy practice focuses on these core underlying beliefs as the source for true meaningful and lasting change.
