Dr. Colston Edgerton is an assistant professor of surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina where he works in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He also has an appointment at the Ralph H Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and practices a wide range of general surgery. His clinical interests are bariatric surgery, revisional bariatric surgery, foregut surgery, anti-reflux surgery, paraesophageal hernia, ventral or incisional hernia, inguinal hernia, biliary and gallbladder disease, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, and endoscopy.
Dr. Edgerton completed his general surgery residency at MUSC where he served as the administrative chief resident and was recognized with several teaching and leadership awards. He completed a fellowship in advanced minimally invasive GI and bariatric surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. While there he performed research on novel methods to maximize weight loss after bariatric surgery, minimizing readmissions following surgery, and understanding how surgeons are most effectively trained in minimally invasive surgery. His academic interests are in health disparities for access to bariatric surgery, and outcomes for revisional bariatric surgery.
He is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Americas Hernia Society (AHS), Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society, the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Society, and Phi Beta Kappa.
