About

Museum

The Burrum Museum chronicles the mining history of the Burrum District which began with the discovery of coal in 1863.This signaled the beginning of rapid development in the Burrum District and led to the development of the towns of Howard, Torbanlea, Burrum Heads and Toogoom. The Burrum Coalfields played a major role in the early development of the entire region, providing impetus for the extension of the railway north from Brisbane.
Alongside of mining a number of other industries have also been prominent in the history of the Burrum District; in particular timber getting, citrus growing, cattle farming and small crop agriculture.
The Museum came into being in 2006, initially with the main building displays. The complex now includes; Slab Hut, Managers Office, Mining Locomotive Rusty No 5 plus railway tracks and outdoor displays
