Early in 1972 Professor Salvador Gonzalez of De La Salle University received an invitation from Professor Wong Chung Chow, President of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society, for three mathematicians to represent the Philippines in the first bi-annual meeting of the SEAMS to be held in Singapore in July of that year. It was with some consternation that the group to whom Professor Gonzalez communicated Professor Wong?s request received the invitation. For we found that Dr. Alicia Santos who had represented the Philippines in the founding meetings of the SEAMS in Hong Kong had left for the United States and we had no official means of choosing representatives of Singapore.
