When you have a loved one suffering from addiction, caring for the person is not enough. You also need to arm yourself with knowledge to truly help that loved one. Without the right information, we can do more harm than good to the person. You might feel frustrated why the addicted loved one cannot quit, but it is more complex than you think. There are a lot of misconceptions that surround the real nature of addiction. For example, a lot of people think that addiction is the person’s choice why he or she is in that situation. Initially, the person had made a choice to take drugs. However, the chemicals in the drug affect the brain further triggering compulsive drug abuse. The drugs take control over the brain, robbing the person to think or reason logically. Their addiction guides them and causes them to exhibit negative behavior.
For example, opioids affect the neurotransmitters that release dopamine in our body. Dopamine is a hormone that regulates our emotions and motivation. Opioids release a sudden spike of dopamine into the brain causing euphoria or high. Because it makes the person feel good, he would want to repeat the same experience. However, his tolerance level to the drug gets higher as he uses it continually. Thus, he takes larger doses to maintain the good feeling.
The addicted person uses that “good” result to justify his or her drug use. It also causes him to deny help. Why would someone seek help if he gets something “positive” from it? Before long, the person will lie, manipulate, or become violent just to justify their actions and behavior.
If you want to help an addicted loved one overcome their addiction, nagging them about it will not help. Instead wait for the time they are free from the influence of drugs and talk to them if they are up to it. If they are open about getting help, you can check out local rehab or detox clinics. You can also call the Drug Rehab and Alcohol Detox Helpline, Inc. for more information about available help and programs.
The road to recovery is not an easy road. Expect moments when your addicted loved one will have doubts about getting help. They might even back out from the plan. You just need to be patient and continue to look for windows of opportunity until they relent. Let them know that you are there for them but you also need to set boundaries so you don’t enable their addiction.
For someone who is suffering from alcoholism or substance abuse, fear and shame are common emotions that surface. It is okay to have these feelings but you still need to act and seek treatment. Know that there are people and professionals who are willing to help you. The first step is to admit that you have a problem and need help.
If you do not know where to start, call the Drug Rehab and Alcohol Detox Helpline Inc. We have caring professionals who have years of experience dealing with drug and alcohol abuse. They will help you take the first step towards a productive life without the influence of drugs or alcohol.
