Bereits für das Jahr 1540 ist für Kahla die Existenz einer ledigen Kirche bezeugt. Kahla gehörte damals zur Kirchengemeinde Dreska und wurde erst 1669 eigenständige Gemein-de, was eine Inschrift in der Taufschale der Kirche bezeugt. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte brannte das Dorf mehrfach ab, zuletzt 1804, bei dem 75% der Häuser zerstört wurden. 1811 wurde die heutige Kirche errichtet als 27. Gebäude, das nach dem Brand wiedererrichtet worden ist. Das zeigt ein Schluss-stein über der Südtür der Kirche. Über die Jahre wurde die Kirche mehrfach mit viel Engagement renoviert und saniert. 1978 entstand der Gemeinderaum in der alten Sakristei. Der Turm wurde 1998 neu eingedeckt, gestrichen und die Turmspitze mit Kugel, Wetterfahne und KreuAnschrift und telefon von Evangelische Kirche Kahla Kahla b. Plessa
