The gallenera, which means ?poultry dealer? in Spanish, is a traditional receiving bench that has its origins in 16th century colonial Philippines. A cage was built under the seat for keeping fighting cocks and poultry, gathered for the landlord or tax collector in place of cash. A central panel at the front of the cage, often decoratively carved, slid open to receive the hapless birds.
