The Natural Sciences Research Institute (NSRI) was reorganized from the former Natural Science Research Center in 1983 under Executive Order 889, with the mandate to promote exellence in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Meteorology and Environmental Sciences. In 1986, this mandate was expanded to include interdisciplinary areas such as Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Applied Mathematics and Materials Science.
