Gender selection is a procedure whereby IVF is used with PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis) to help a woman conceive a baby of her chosen sex. In simple terms, the woman’s eggs are taken and fertilized in external laboratory conditions to allow the embryo to develop. Once the embryo is developed to the size of about eight cells, one of the cells is removed to determine the gender. Upon determination of the gender, the embryo of the is implanted back into the mother for full pregnancy. This technique is now widely practised and known to be safe and near 100% accurate for determining the gender of a child.
