Reading is one of the great historic towns of Berkshire, renowned for its old half-timber houses and a popular tourist destination throughout the year. Once one of the most influential and wealthiest of England's many religious foundations, it was dissolved under Henry VIII and comprehensively looted. Today, its ruins are still an impressive reminder of its former glory. Whatever the weather, you're bound to see teams of rowers powering up and down the rivers, and fishing is also popular. Pleasure cruises take visitors along the river during the summer, and the Barge Festival, held every year, brings in the crowds. That makes parking in Reading a challenge, with spaces at a premium.
