The old farm buildings have been converted into seven specially designed holiday cottages now called Long Byres. Each cottage is self-contained, warm, (centrally heated, double glazed) with lovely views; some looking across the Lake District hills. About Us The locality has much to entertain visitors. The farm itself is home to sheep, chickens and geese. Children are welcome to come and meet Mo the pig or our two alpacas. The golf course is only 1.5 miles away and Talkin Tarn is excellent for boating, coarse fishing and walking. Cycle hire is available locally, with many good routes across the fells on "green" roads. For those keen on discovering our Heritage Hadrian's Wall is a must. Situated next door to Geltsdale RSPB Reserve which is home to a small number of Black Grouse and other upland birds, you will find something for all the family at Long Byres. The Cottages We have seven cottages here at Talkin Head, with each cottage having beautiful views across the fields and valley towards the Lake District beyond.
All cottages have central heating and double glazing and hot water is available all day. Bed linen and towels are provided and are inclusive in the price. There is also a shared laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing facilities. The kitchens are supplied with full size cookers as well as microwaves.
Ample car parking is available and dogs and other pets are welcome but must be looked after all all times. Nearby Attractions Long Byres Cottages are situated on 120 acre working hill farm which lies along the River Gelt. Hares, badgers and red squirrels share the farm with a herd of Exmoor Ponies and various other farm animals. There are good walks over the North Pennine Fells.
Hadrians Wall at its closest point is 5 miles from the cottages and Ullswater, the nearest of the Lake District lakes is less than 25 miles away. Gretna Green on the Scottish Border is 11miles and easily accessible.
