Live Acquisition and Volatile Data Volatile data is that data obtained from a live machine and can provide essential information about the logged on user and their running or current actions. From main memory it may be possible for the examiner to obtain: Command history, services/driver information, passwords, data associated with user applications e.g.: Word documents, system date and time, logged on user(s) and their authentication credentials, clipboard contents etc. From the network state it may be possible to capture the state of a malevolent connection with its associated IP address, providing further leads for an investigator. Mobile Devices Apart from the usual data stored on a mobile phone such as calendar dates, memos, contact phone numbers, call log information etc, whenever a mobile phone sends or receives a message (sms/mms) or phone call or even is used to take a photograph, information on the position of the device is stored within the memory and this can (in many cases) be recovered to show the position of the device to within a few yards together with a date/time stamp. This data can be invaluable to law enforcement agencies when dealing with criminal offences as in the Soham murders; for employers to confirm or to check on the location of their employees at a given time; for parents to check on the whereabouts of their child; for a partner to check on the location of their spouse at a particular time.
