Our classes are open to anyone of seven years upwards, with classes tailored to both adults and children as well as courses specific to particular areas of karate. The Academy also teaches a self defence system and techniques which are applicable to modern day life. About Us Derby Karate Academy was founded in 1985, developed from clubs that had been training since the early 1970's and teaches the authentic style of Japanese Wado-Ryu Karate. At the training session you would be asked to take it at your own pace and find your feet. Many people when they join the Academy probably aren't as fit as they'd like to be, but with time and sensible goal setting not only do they become healthier but learn something of value and use. Trade Bodies / Associations Lee Minion – 5th Dan (Godan) The Founder of British Karate Academy and Head Coach to Derby Karate Academy (DKA) Lee has been practising and studying martial arts for over 35 years. Lee started training in 1977 and has trained with some of the worlds top Wado instructors including Sensei(s) Sakagami, Shiomitsu and Suzuki, among many other Japanese and English instructors.
