It all began in 1946 when the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions approved the charter for Salisbury Axle Federal Credit Union. Just two years later membership was at 591 and growing. By 1960 membership had almost doubled and for the next three decades up to the present time this number would rapidly advance. Currently membership is over 45,000 and still growing.Part of this growth has to be attributed to the ongoing innovations FFCU has incorporated for its members. Each of the past decades has seen more advances in our services and technology giving our members the very same, if not better, options as our competition while keeping their costs to a minimum and offering a larger return on their accounts.Besides expanding its services and products, the Credit Union itself has grown over the years. By 1972 two new branches were ready to be opened. The first was in Auburn, IN and the second location was in Churubusco, IN. A few years later in 1976 the Credit Unions name was changed to Dana Corporation Federal Credit Union and in the following year a new Fort Wayne, IN facility was built. The Credit Union merged with Weatherhead Federal Credit Union in 1978 and created a third branch office in Angola, IN. The most exciting period of growth was during the 80s. A fourth branch was opened in Syracuse, IN in 1982. Both Marion, IN and Corinth, MS branches were added in the following two years. In 1984 two more branches were added in Montgomery, AL and Morganton, NC. Then in 1985 a new facility in South Beloit, IL was created due to a merger with Warner Gear Federal Credit Union. A tenth branch office opened in 1986 in Gastonia, NC. The year following, the Credit Unions name was shortened to Dana Federal Credit Union.The 1990s saw more internal growth however, new buildings were constructed in 1996 for both the Morganton, NC and Corinth, MS offices while the Fort Wayne, IN branch was remodeled and expanded. A new building was built in 1997 for the Angola, IN branch. In the new millennium, a brand new facility for the Syracuse, IN branch was built and in the spring of 2002, FFCU expanded its services into the Fort Wayne Meijer Stores offering evening and weekend hours.The Credit Union officially became Fort Financial Credit Union in December of 2002 and was announced and adopted at the 56th annual meeting in February 2003. There was record turnout for the annual meeting despite blizzard-like conditions. The name Fort Financial Credit Union was selected by the naming committee from over 6,000 names submitted by the membership of Fort Financial Credit Union in a contest to win $5,000 for the winning name. In 2004, Fort Financial completed construction of its third Meijer in-store branch to serve the Northeast quadrant of Fort Wayne. On April 22, 2009, FFCU opened up it's fourth Meijer in-store branch in Marion, IN. In March 2010, the National Credit Union Administration formally approved the merger of Specialty Federal Credit Union, formerly Slater-Steel, with Fort Financial. The consolidation provides former Specialty members with improved product offerings and technologies that were not previously available to them. Fort Financial was able to find a home for the entire Specialty staff. FFCU is proud to complete a merger that leaves the legacy of both credit unions alive, blending families, making them both stronger in the long run. Today, FFCU operates with extended drive-thru hours and continues to serve the greater Fort Wayne area with its 3 Meijer in-store branches and Marion, IN Meijer with an in-store branch offering convenient hours, even on most major holidays.
