You see all the television ads with lawyers promising "quick checks" and the like, but you think: why do they need to advertise so much on TV if they are that good? Well meaning (and not so well meaning) friends and acquaintances offer you the names of several lawyers. Or, maybe you are just thumbing through the yellow pages, with ads that all look pretty much the same. Here's the tool lawyers use when looking for lawyers in other cities: they go to Martindale Hubbell.com, and search for lawyers with an "AV" rating. (Note: this is different than "Lawyers.com," which is Martindale's consumer-oriented service.) In Las Vegas, less than 5% of the attorneys have the "AV" rating. The rating is determined by a peer review rating process. Another tool is to look on "Superlawyers," which lists the lawyers chosen as the "top" attorneys in Las Vegas by Las Vegas Life magazine. Or, another tool is to search for attorneys certified by the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) which requires at least 25 jury trials, and peer recommendation (limited to approximately top 1% of trial attorneys.)If you know a Las Vegas attorney already who does not practice personal injury, it is a good idea to ask him or her for a referral. They generally know someone who's good. Steven M. Burris is AV rated, chosen as Las Vegas "Superlawyer" by Las Vegas Life magazine, and is a member of ABOTA. He is a past president of the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association. He has over 25 years of experience, and has personally settled or tried over 2000 personal injury cases. A significant portion of my cases are referred to me by other attorneys in LV. Can I handle my own personal injury case in Las Vegas without an attorney?Yes, but 95 out of 100 times, it's not a good idea. The insurance adjuster knows all the rules and regulations, all the "tricks, " you don't. Adjusters and insurance investigators act friendly at first to secure your cooperation, but don't be misled: they are not being paid to help you.
