A Palermo i Salesiani di don Bosco giungono nel 1902. Il fondatore del primo istituto in v. Sampolo è don Garlaschi che fonda loratorio della scuola. Il 31/10/1919 viene fondato, presso lantico convento di Santa Chiara, listituto per gli orfani di guerra: in esso sorgerà una scuola tipografica. Oggi, loratorio salesiano Santa Chiara accoglie i ragazzi dei degradati quartieri del centro storico ed i numerosi extracomunitari che vi trovano sostegno morale, spirituale e materiale. Il 24/5/1937, per dare spazio agli alunni esterni ed alloratorio, viene acquistata Villa Ranchibile. Listituto offre alla città una scuola media, un quinquennio sperimentale unitario a tre indirizzi (classico, scientifico ed I.T.C.), una chiesa pubblica ed un cineteatro.
