Apfelstädt ist ein Ortsteil der Gemeinde Nesse-Apfelstädt und hat rund 1400 Einwohner. 423 Mitglieder hat die Kirchengemeinde Apfelstädt.Die Kirche Sankt Walpurgis in Apfelstädt hat ein aus dem elften Jahrhundert stammendes Kirchenschiff, welches Reste romanischer Fensterbögen aufweist.An der Südseite der Kirche ist ein für Thüringen einmaliger Außenputz mit Bemalungen erhalten, der aus der Mitte des 15. Jahrhundert stammt, unter anderem eine Sonnenuhr. An der Nordseite ist eine Sächsische Elle eingelassen. Sie misst 56 cm und diente über Jahrhunderte als "Eichmaß" für Handwerker. Der gotische Kirchturm wurde in der Zeit um 1396 errichtet. 1715 wurde ihm das wehrhafte Äußere genommen. Die Schlagglocke im Turm ist von 1562.
