Además de una amplia residencia, las instalaciones deportivas o la biblioteca, el estudiante universitario puede encontrar un lugar adecuado para desarrollar sus aficiones e inquietudes -culturales, sociales, espirituales-, y donde fomentar la verdadera amistad. El Colegio Mayor Santillana ofrece a los universitarios de Madrid una formación integral en todos los ámbitos –profesional, social, espiritual y humano– para dar respuesta a las necesidades de la sociedad actual. La labor del Colegio Mayor está impregnada de un sentido cristiano de la vida, que se traduce en la exigencia en el estudio, el impulso de los valores sociales y de servicio, el respeto a la libertad personal, el fomento de las virtudes humanas, el clima de confianza y cordialidad… Además, existen algunas actividades de formación cristiana y la disponibilidad de un sacerdote, para quien libremente lo desee. La formación espiritual y religiosa está encomendada a la Prelatura del Opus Dei, institución de la Iglesia Católica fundada en 1928 por San Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer. Una de las mayores riquezas del Colegio Mayor Santillana es la convivencia con personas de distinta mentalidad y procedencia, en un ambiente de universalidad, tolerancia, respeto y sana preocupación por las cuestiones sociales. Manifestación de este espirituo es que los propios residentes -sin descuidar el estudio de su carrera- organizan y participan en las diversas actividades del Colegio, según sus gustos y aficiones. Los antiguos residentes son una parte importante del Colegio Mayor. Los años de juventud e ideales universitarios, hacen que los antiguos residentes guarden un paso entrañable de su paso por Santillana.
