Turkey rearing on Philibenstown Farm can be traced back as far as the 1930’s. The Sweeney name has been in Philibenstown for four generations. We sit on the river Glyde five miles north of Ardee in county Louth. With a beautiful new daughter we are hopeful that our family tradition of Christmas bronze turkey rearing will last long into the next generation bringing the same pleasure as it has brought us.
We run a family business here at Philibenstown Farm. We grow wheat and spring barley and rear sheep, cattle and bronze turkeys. When we commenced Bronze Turkey rearing we began with only 90 birds. We now sell over 300 bronze turkeys each Christmas. The turkeys are reared on our farm and enjoy the freedom of the open grassland every day. They are housed at night in well ventilated barns with natural daylight on fresh straw bedding. Our Bronze Turkeys grow at their own rate and slowly mature on the farm achieving unbeatable flavour and texture. For this reason, returning customers often comment that they never liked turkey until they tasted a Sweeney Bronze Turkey. Its meat is renowned to be moist and more succulent than the white turkey. The Bronze Turkey has predominately dark feathers, which have a coppery sheen. The copper colour is inherited from the breeds’ wild ancestors.
Philibenstown Farm work in partnership with other farmers who have stands at the Christmas markets in Dún Laoghaire and Farmleigh house in the Phoenix Park. There they meet up with new and existing customers and take orders for the coming Christmas. You can collect your turkey at the family farm or with our farmers at the Dublin markets. All our turkeys come oven ready with a recipe included. They are supplied with the giblets, for making traditional gravy.
