In den 1960er Jahren als Verein zur bäuerlichen Selbsthilfe gegründet, ist der Maschinenring heute ein bedeutender Wirtschaftsfaktor und eines der führenden Dienstleistungsunternehmen in allen ländlichen Regionen Österreichs. Bis heute unterstützen die rund 80 Standorte heimische Landwirte dabei, ihre Maschinen und ihre Arbeitskraft besser auszulasten: Indem sie gemeinsam Geräte nutzen. Und indem sie für andere Bauern arbeiten, für Kommunen, Unternehmen und Private. Denn mittlerweile umfasst der Maschinenring die drei Kernbereiche Agrar, Service und Personal. Zu den Kunden aus Landwirtschaft und Kommunen kommen auch Klein- und Mittelbetriebe im ländlichen Raum hinzu, österreichweit agierende Handels- und Infrastrukturunternehmen sowie Privatpersonen.Der Maschinenring ermöglicht einen Zuverdienst, durch den viele Landwirtinnen und Landwirte ihre Höfe im Nebenerwerb weiterführen können. Rund 70.000 Betriebe sind Mitglied beim Maschinenring, das entspricht ca. zwei Drittel aller Mehrfachantragsteller in Österreich sind Teil der Organisation.
Zuletzt arbeiteten rund 30.000 Menschen über die österreichischen Maschinenringe.
